Mediterranean ("we", "us", or "our") operates the Mediterranean Diet & Meal Plan mobile application and related services (collectively, the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use the App. By using the App, you agree to the practices described in this Policy.
1. Information We Collect
We collect information you provide directly, information generated as you use the App, and information from third-party services you connect.
a. Account & Profile Information
- Name, email address, and password (for authentication).
- Profile photo, and optionally: age, weight, and height (used for calorie and macronutrient calculations).
b. Health & Lifestyle Preferences
- Health goals (e.g., heart health, anti-inflammatory, general wellness, weight management).
- Dietary preferences (vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, gluten-free, etc.).
- Food allergies and intolerances.
- Cooking experience, pantry level, and household size.
c. App Activity
- Meal plans generated, recipes saved or created, favourites, and grocery lists.
- Calorie and macronutrient tracking data.
- Streaks, in-app interactions, feature usage, and preferences.
d. Device & Technical Data
- Device model, operating system, unique device identifiers, and language settings.
- App version, crash reports, performance data, and diagnostic logs.
- IP address and approximate location (derived from IP).
e. Payment & Subscription Data
Subscription purchases are processed by Apple App Store or Google Play. We do not store your full payment card details. We receive limited transaction data (such as subscription status, plan type, renewal, and cancellation events) needed to manage your access.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To create and manage your account and authenticate access.
- To generate personalized Mediterranean meal plans, recipe suggestions, and grocery lists.
- To provide AI-powered features such as meal regeneration, nutrition insights, weekly summaries, and the conversational coach (limited to on-topic Mediterranean eating; not medical advice).
- To calculate calorie and macronutrient targets based on any body stats you provide.
- To operate, maintain, secure, and improve the App and its features.
- To communicate service updates, transactional messages, and (where permitted) product news.
- To process subscriptions, trials, renewals, and cancellations.
- To detect, prevent, and address fraud, abuse, or technical issues.
- To comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.
3. Legal Bases for Processing (EEA/UK Users)
We rely on the following legal bases: (i) performance of a contract when providing the App you subscribe to; (ii) your consent for optional data such as body stats and marketing communications; (iii) legitimate interests in improving and securing the App; and (iv) compliance with legal obligations.
4. AI Features and Data Handling
Certain features (meal plan personalization, recipe regeneration, nutrition tips, weekly summaries, and the AI coach) use third-party large language model providers. Only the minimum data needed to generate a response is transmitted (for example, dietary preferences, allergies, and current meal plan context). We do not use your personal information to train third-party foundation models. The AI coach is scope-limited to Mediterranean eating and does not provide medical, diagnostic, or treatment advice.
5. How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in the following circumstances:
- Service providers: cloud hosting, analytics, crash reporting, customer support, email delivery, and AI processing vendors that support the App.
- App stores: Apple App Store and Google Play for subscription management.
- Instacart (optional): if you choose to order groceries through the Instacart integration, the ingredients and quantities you send will be shared with Instacart under their privacy policy.
- Legal & safety: when required by law, subpoena, or to protect the rights, safety, and property of Mediterranean or others.
- Business transfers: in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to standard confidentiality safeguards.
6. Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active and for the period reasonably necessary to provide the App, comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. When you delete your account, we remove or anonymize your personal data within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law.
7. Your Rights & Choices
- Access, correction, deletion: edit your profile and preferences in-app, or contact us to request a copy or deletion of your data.
- Delete account: use the Delete Account option in Settings to permanently close your account.
- Notifications: toggle push and email notifications from Settings and your device preferences.
- Marketing opt-out: unsubscribe using the link in any marketing email.
- Regional rights: users in the EEA, UK, California, and other regions may have additional rights (portability, objection, restriction, and the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority).
8. Children's Privacy
The App is intended for users aged 18 and above and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will delete it.
9. Security
We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect your information, including encryption in transit, access controls, and vendor due diligence. No system is fully secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. International Data Transfers
We are based in the United States and may process your data in the U.S. and other countries. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) for cross-border transfers.
11. Health Information Disclaimer
The App provides general nutrition and lifestyle information inspired by the Mediterranean diet. It is not a medical device and does not provide medical, diagnostic, or treatment advice. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before making dietary changes, especially if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or take medication.
12. Third-Party Services
The App may link to third-party services (e.g., Apple App Store, Google Play, Instacart). Their handling of your data is governed by their own privacy policies, which we encourage you to review.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via the App or by email. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the latest revision.
